The large chef's knife was gone, and I was certain it had been there that morning because I had used it to slice an apple. 04:17 The trash can had also been dragged away from its normal place beside the sink and left in the center of the floor. 04:23 Inside it were several objects I did not recognize. An empty soup can from a brand I never purchased, a wrinkled receipt from a gas station 20 meters away, and, most unsettling of all, a pair of latex gloves turned inside out. 04:38 Any hunger I had felt disappeared. 04:41 In its place came a crawling feeling across my scalp, as if insects had begun building nests in my hair. 04:48 Upstairs, my bedroom door was closed. From the darkness ahead came the sound of dripping water. Every drop reverberated through the tunnel like another second in a countdown towards something terrible. 23:32 My feet ached from crossing the uneven concrete. I realized that by then we must have traveled at least half a mile below ground, perhaps farther. 23:41 We continued descending into an area that could not possibly have belonged to the building's original design. 23:47 The air grew heavier and increasingly difficult to breathe. 23:50 People started coughing, producing the dry hacking sound created by foul air mixed with terror. 23:57 Then every light went out simultaneously, as though someone had flipped a single switch. 24:02 The darkness was so complete that it seemed to possess physical weight pressing directly against my eyes. 24:09 Screams began at once. People shoved one another in blind animal panic. The guards activated their flashlights, but the beams offered no comfort. Without warning, heavy metal doors started slamming closed behind us. Each door struck with a final thunderous bang that traveled through the tunnel like a gunshot. 25:06 They shut one after another. Boom! 25:10 Every possible path of retreat was being sealed. Somebody close to me began to pray, their voice high and desperate in the darkness. 25:19 The guards chanting ceased all at once. In the silence that followed, I could hear hundreds of people breathing, whimpering and dragging their feet through the dark. 25:28 It sounded as if all of us had been swallowed and trapped inside the belly of some enormous creature. 25:34 Different lights eventually flickered to life. These were not the harsh fluorescent lights from the corridor. They were red emergency lamps and their infernal glow made everyone appear as if they were already drenched in blood. 25:47 We now stood inside a vast chamber, approximately the size of a gymnasium. It had concrete walls and a ceiling so high that it vanished into darkness. 25:57 Metal folding chairs had been positioned in flawless rows, all facing a short raised platform at the opposite end of the room. 26:04 The guards ordered everyone to sit. Their gestures remained rigid and mechanical, as unnatural as before. 26:11 Then I noticed something my mind initially refused to comprehend. Some of the chairs were already occupied. People sat in them without moving, all facing the platform. 26:22 Not one turned to observe us as we entered in tears and terror. 26:26 They wore ordinary clothing, jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers. This woman appeared to be in her 40s and wore her graying hair in a ponytail. She took my hand and squeezed it with such force that I thought my fingers might break. 27:08 This isn't real. In perfect synchronization, every guard withdrew and stood against the walls. 27:42 Welcome to recruitment, the man said. His voice traveled through the enormous chamber with impossible clarity. It seemed to come from every direction at the same time. The blood in my veins turned to ice as understanding finally reached me. 27:56 This had never been an evacuation. It was not even a kidnapping in the traditional meaning of the word. It was something far worse, something coordinated, premeditated, and carried out with horrifying precision. 28:10 The man in white began discussing purposes and positions.
